Engineer Bill Hammack disassembled the drinking bird toy to understand the principles behind it. What looks like red water inside the toy is actually methylene chloride. Methylene chloride boils and turns to vapor at room temperature. In fact, the drinking bird toy operates by well known thermodynamic principles.
